DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1545Z AUGUST 17, 2008

Oregon/Washington:
Light to moderately dense smoke is currently situated over the central and
north-central region of Oregon, drifting to the north into southeastern
Washington State.

Canada/Upper Midwest of US:
Light smoke over southern British Columbia is drifting to the north into
the central region of the province. Also, a light to moderately dense
band of smoke from fires last evening's fires across northern Saskatchewan
and southern sections of the Northwest Territories is currently drifting
to the south over central Saskatchewan and central Manitoba. Residual
light smoke is also found in southern Saskatchewan, southern Manitoba,
western Ontario; but also extends further south into eastern Montana,
Minnesota, the Dakotas, Wisconsin, and northern Michigan.

Southern Plains:
Light smoke and/or haze is situated over far eastern Kansas and Nebraska,
southern Missouri, and northern Arkansas.

  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
