DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0100Z AUGUST 18, 2008

Impacts of Western Fires:
Moderately dense to heavy smoke covered portions of extreme north central
Nevada, Idaho, northern California, Oregon, Washington, and Wyoming.
The North Pole Ridge, Ochoca Fire Use, South Barker, Cayuse, Willow
WFU, Gunbarrel and ongoing northern California fires are significant
contributors to these regions of smoke. Residual smoke extended from
the Great Lakes west southwest through the central Midwest and Plains
to the Intermountain Region then northwest into the Canadian Rockies
including portions of British Columbia and Alberta.

Impacts of Canadian Fires:
Numerous fires in northern Saskatchewan and southern Northern Territory
has resulted in a large area of moderate with isolated dense smoke that
extended south through much of Saskatchewan and east across southern
Manitoba and Ontario.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
