DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1530Z AUGUST 26, 2008

Northern US:
In the eastern portions of Montana/Wyoming and into the northern plains
there is a haze which is likely remnant smoke from yesterdays fires in
the US.

South central US:
A haze of unidentified composition can be seen throughout the south
central US. This area may contain remnant smoke as well as other
atmospheric pollutants.  States affected by this area include but are not
limited to Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa, Missouri, Arkansas,
Minnesota and the Dakotas.

  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
