DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0215Z AUGUST 28, 2008

Idaho:
Along the border of Elmore and Camas counties, a narrow, dense smoke
plume is currently racing off to the southeast. The plume extends at
least 200km, into Power County, which is located in the southeastern
part of the state.

Montana:
Along the borders of Big Horn and Yellowstone counties, a moderately
dense to dense smoke plume is moving to the southeast. Due to weather
clouds present however, a lot of the smoke was obscured from view.

Nevada/Utah:
In north-central Elko County, very close to the Idaho border, several
fires are producing light to moderately dense smoke plumes. These plumes
are moving off to the east and are extending into northern Utah.

Wyoming:
A moderately dense smoke plume in Park County was observed earlier
this afternoon moving to the east, however, after clouds moved in, it
became extremely difficult to see the smoke. Also, a fire this evening
in Sublette County was producing a moderately dense to dense smoke plume,
moving to the southeast.

Utah:
A moderately dense smoke plume in Grand County was seen moving to the
east into western Colorado through the cloud cover present over the area.

California:
A light smoke plume in Siskiyou County earlier this afternoon was observed
moving to the south into Humboldt and Trinity counties.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
