DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0245Z AUGUST 29, 2008

Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Nevada, Utah and Colorado:
There is an area of primarily light to moderate smoke (with smaller
areas of dense smoke) that covers much of southeastern Idaho, extreme
northeastern Nevada, extreme northern Utah, most of Wyoming, southcentral
and southeastern Montana, northern Colorado, and western Nebraska.
Eastward or southeastward plumes from Idaho's South Barker Fire and
Nature Fire, Montana's Dunn Mtn Fire, and Wyoming's Gunbarrel Fire are
the main contributors to this area. A new fire in Gooding County, Idaho,
the East Slide Rock Ridge fire in Nevada, fires in northwestern Colorado,
and a fire in Sublette County Wyoming are also contributing.

Also, separately in Utah there is a fire in southern Grand County
producing a light to moderate smoke plume extending southward and a fire
in Kane County producing light smoke moving southward.

Oregon and northern California:
A fire in Douglas County, Oregon and several fires in Jefferson County,
Oregon and a fire in Siskiyou County, California are producing light
smoke that extends southward or southwestward.

Kansas, Missouri, Illinois:
Haze in eastern Kansas, Missouri and southern Illinois might be mixed
with some light remnant smoke from previous days fires further west.

Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba:
Areas of very light remnant smoke mixed with haze can be seen in southern
Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
