DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0115Z AUGUST 30, 2008

Impacts of Western Fires:
Smoke of various thicknesses covered portions of northeastern Nevada,
Idaho, Wyoming and Montana while residual moderate smoke was located
over southeastern Nebraska and northwest Missouri.  Fires of particular
importance include:
South Barker...moderate to isolated heavy smoke extended 150 km to NE;
Dunn Mtn Assist...light to moderately thick smoke extended 300 km to E/NE;
Gunbarrel...heavy smoke extended 400 km to the E;
East Slide Rock Ridge...Moderate to heavy smoke extended 170 km NW; and
Sublette County, WY...Moderate with isolated heavy smoke extended 250
km E.

Oregon/California:
Fires in northern California and western Oregon resulted in generally
light smoke that was moving east.

  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
