DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1500Z AUGUST 30, 2008

Central United States:
Smoke from a large fire in central Montana is currently obscured by
clouds. A mixture of smoke and SO2 is barely detectable but covers
a large region of the central Plains from the Dakotas to Kansas and
Oklahoma and eastward to the central Mississippi Valley.

Canada:
Residue smoke covers eastern Ontario from the shore of Hudson Bay and
southward.

  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
