DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1500Z AUGUST 31, 2008

Central United States:
A mixture of light smoke, haze and SO2 covers a large region of the
central Plains from Minnesota through eastern Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma
and down into Texas.  Some very light smoke or haze can be seen over the
upper Great Lakes region.  Light haze also cover the central Mississippi
Valley and lower Ohio Valley including much of Kentucky.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
