DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0300Z SEPTEMBER 1, 2008

California and western Nevada:
A fire in Fresno County, one in El Dorado County and another near the
border of El Dorado and Alpine Counties (near the Nevada border) are
producing plumes of light smoke that extend toward the east northeast.
In Inyo County, there are areas of blowing dust (blowing eastward into
Nevada).

Idaho, Montana, Wyoming and northeastern Nevada:
Cloud cover is hindering smoke detection, but through cloud breaks the
East Slide Rock Ridge fire in Nevada, the South Barker fire in Idaho,
the Gunbarrel fire in Wyoming and the Dunn Mtn Assist fire in Montana
could be observed today.
As the clouds moved eastward, light to moderate smoke plumes were observed
from the South Barker and East Slide Rock Ridge fires extending toward
the northeast while any plumes from the Gunbarrel and Dunn Mtn Assist
fires continue to be covered by clouds.

Central U.S.
A quasi-stationary area of haze mixed with light remnant smoke from
previous days western fires extends from eastern North Dakota/western
Minnesota south to Oklahoma.

Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee, West Virginia, Virginia, North Carolina:
An area of haze probably also mixed with light smoke from previous
days western fires extends from southern Illinois, across Kentucky
and Tennessee, and into southern West Virginia, southern Virginia and
northern North Carolina.

Alaska:
The fire in eastern Yukon-Koyukuk continues to burn. The light smoke
plume extends northwestward tonight.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
