DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1600Z SEPTEMBER 2, 2008

Upper and Lower Great Lakes/Ohio River Valleys:
A large area of SO2 from the Kasatochi eruption mixed in with some haze
and other pollutants spreads across sections of northwest Quebec/southeast
Ontario and extend southward into eastern Minnesota and Iowa, most
of Wisconsin and Illinois and extends east into western Michigan and
northern/western Indiana.

California:
A wildfire in northwest Trinity county (Salmon-Trinity Alps wilderness)
is producing a light to moderately dense narrow plume of smoke southeast
across the county.

  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
