DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1515Z SEPTEMBER 3, 2008


Northern Plains/Southern Canada:
A swath of SO2 from the Kasatochi volcano is situated over North Dakota
and western Minnesota, north to southern Saskatchewan, southern Manitoba,
and far southwestern Ontario. The SO2 plume is generally moving to
the north.

California:
In Fresno County, a light smoke plume is drifting to the west and extends
out 50km from the source, and in Del Norte County, a light smoke plume
is beginning to emerge on vis imagery extending to the southwest.

  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
