DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0130Z SEPTEMBER 4, 2008

Virginia:
In Campbell County Virginia, a fire produced light to moderately dense
smoke which sped off to the east and reached Mottoway County before
nightfall decreased visibility.

California:
In eastern Fresno County a fire is emitting moderately dense to dense
smoke which is traveling to the east, extending into Esmeralda County,
Nevada.  Near the southern and northern borders of Yolo County, there
are two fires which are producing light to moderately dense smoke which
is moves to the south.  In northern California there are several fires
which are generating moderately dense to dense smoke which is traveling
west out over the Pacific Ocean.

Oregon:
There are several fires throughout Oregon which are emanating light smoke.
The most significant of these fires is in northeastern Harney County
whose smoke extends into Malheur County nearly reaching the Idaho border.

Alaska:
A large fire in the western portion of Yukon-Koyukuk area appears to
be generating light to moderately dense smoke which is trailing off to
the west.

  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
