DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0200Z SEPTEMBER 5, 2008

Southern California:
A fire in Fresno County generated a moderately to heavily dense plume
of smoke that extended to both the east and west.

Northern California:
Moderately to heavily dense smoke from the Siskiyou/Blue 2 Complex and
Panther fires was moving west with light smoke extending south along
and off the coast.

Oregon:
A new blaze in Harney County has resulted in a moderately to heavily
dense plume of smoke that reached 150 km to the southeast.

Idaho/Nevada:
Generally light smoke extended to the southeast from a handful of
fires in Idaho and Nevada including the South Barker and East Slide
Rock Ridge blazes. An exceptional fire near the Idaho county borders
of Benewah and Kootenai was generating moderately dense smoke.

Central Plains:
Isolated light smoke extended to the south from any of a number of ag
burns in Kansas and Oklahoma.

North Carolina/Virginia:
Light smoke from fires in NC and VA extended to the north and northeast.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
