DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1500Z SEPTEMBER 7, 2008

California:
In eastern Fresno County a fire is emitting light to moderately
dense smoke. The smoke begins traveling west covering much of the
county but then veers to the north and west passing through Medera,
Mariposa, Tuolumne, and Mono counties before entering into Mineral and
Lyon counties in Nevada. In northern California, the Siskiyou/Blue
2 Complex and Panther Fire continue to emit light to moderately dense
smoke which can be seen extending over 500km to the east. The smoke is
affecting almost all of southern Oregon, the northwestern area of Nevada
and the southwest corner of Idaho.

Oregon:
The Rattle Fire and the Lonesome complex continue to generate light
smoke which is fanning out to the west.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
