DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1600Z SEPTEMBER 12, 2008

Northern California/Southern Oregon/Northern Nevada:
Mainly thin smoke from several fires scattered across northern California
and southern Oregon was visible this morning across northern California,
southern Oregon, and northern Nevada. Localized more dense areas of
smoke were seen closer to the fires, particularly over Siskiyou, Del
Norte, and Humboldt counties of northwestern California, and Klamath,
Douglass, and Jackson counties of southwestern Oregon. The smoke was
moving generally to the east. However, farther to the west, the smoke
was also moving to the west and southwest and offshore.

Idaho:
Fires in Clearwater and Idaho counties were producing thin to locally
moderately dense smoke which moved erratically during the morning.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
