DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0130Z SEPTEMBER 14, 2008

Utah:
In north central Kane County a fire is producing moderately dense to
dense smoke which is traveling to the south extending over 150km well
into Coconino County Arizona.

Arizona:
A fire in central Coconino County is emitting light smoke which is
traveling to the south. The county is also being affected by the smoke
from the fire in Kane County, Utah.

Southern California:
Moderately dense to dense smoke is being generated by a fire located in
the eastern portion of Fresno County. This smoke is mainly traveling
to the west with some fanning out to the east. There is also a fire
in north central Tulare County which is emanating light to moderately
dense smoke which is moving to the northeast.

Northern California:
The fires in northern California continue to emit moderately dense to
dense smoke which is spreading out in all directions but the main flow
appears to be northward where the smoke merges with smoke from Oregon
fires.

Oregon:
The Rattle Fire and the Lonesome Complex are generating moderately dense
to dense smoke. The smoke from these fires is moving to the north where
it begins to thin out becoming light to moderately dense.

Idaho:
The two fire in Idaho County and the fire in Camas County are generating
fans of light smoke which extend to the south.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
