DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0202Z SEPTEMBER 16, 2008

Western US (Washington, Oregon, California):
Smoke from wildfires burning from central to northern California and into
southwest Oregon are producing a large area of moderate to extremely
dense smoke through most of central and northern California and into
the Pacific Ocean and north into parts of Oregon and continuing north
into Washington and southern British Columbia.

The wildfires burning in southeast Fresno and north central Tulare
counties (Sequoia National Forest) are producing a line of moderate to
extremely dense smoke stretching from the southern sections and moving
into the central sections of the San Joaquin Valley and then moving
northwest towards the Sacramento Valley.

Over northwest California, wildfires in the Siskiyou Mountains over
eastern Del Norte county and western Siskiyou county were producing
a moderately dense to very dense smoke plume that extended northwest
towards the coastline of Curry county in southwest Oregon.

In Oregon the wildfire burning on the Jackson/Klamath county line and
over northeast Douglas county are combining to produce a very dense smoke
plume that was moving north into southwest Washington and appeared to be
one of the main contributors to the large overall smoke plume covering
the northwest United States.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
