DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0045Z SEPTEMBER 18, 2008

Northwestern U.S. and northern California:
Wildfires in Oregon and extreme northwestern California have produced
moderate heavy to heavy smoke across the western half of Oregon and
Washington northeast across southern British Columbia then east into
central Alberta.

Light to moderate smoke from a fire in Park County, MT, stretched 145
km to the northeast. Light smoke extended 90 km to the northeast of a
blaze in Big Horn County, WY. Moderately dense to heavy smoke from a
fire in Clark County, ID, extended 55 km to the southwest.

Southern California:
The fire in Fresno County has produced a significant area of light smoke
that stretched northeast into central NV.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
