DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0145Z SEPTEMBER 21, 2008

Oregon:
Extensive cloud cover precludes smoke detection over much of Oregon.

California/Nevada:
The long running fires in Del Norte and western Siskiyou counties
continue to burn. Cloud cover is hindering the full extent of the smoke
but an area of moderately dense smoke can be seen moving to the east
into central and eastern Siskiyou county.

A few small puffs of smoke were seen drifting north from fires in Butte
and Glenn counties.

The ongoing fires in eastern Fresno and northern Tulare counties
were producing moderately dense and dense smoke in the vicinity of
the fires. Light smoke was spreading to the southwest, reaching the
Kings/Tulare border, and also to the east extending into southern
Esmeralda and Nye counties in Nevada.

Montana/Idaho:
A fire in western Lincoln county blew up in the afternoon. An area of
light to moderately dense smoke was seen drifting to the northwest into
extreme northern Idaho before clouds moved over the area. Another fire
near Swan Lake along the Flathead/Lake county border had a narrow plume
of light smoke extending to the northwest into western Flathead.

Northern Great Plains and Great Lakes:
Residual smoke from the fires in the Pacific Northwest extended from
southern Saskatchewan, northeast Montana and the Dakotas eastward
across southern Manitoba, Minnesota, Wisconsin, the northern half of
Michigan and adjoining areas of Lakes Huron, Superior and Michigan.
The smoke was moderately dense across portions of southeast Minnesota,
central Wisconsin and northern Michigan and mainly light elsewhere.

Texas/Louisiana:
Fires in Webster parish Louisiana and in San Augustine and extreme
southeast Anderson counties in east Texas had narrow plumes of light to
moderately dense smoke moving to the southwest within about 50 km from
the fire.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
