DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1530Z SEPTEMBER 21, 2008

Pacific Northwest:
Continued cloudy conditions over Washington, Oregon and northern
California prevented smoke from being detected in the first visible
images of the day.

Southern California:
A narrow but thick plume of smoke was spreading slowly west from the
fire in eastern Fresno County.

Northern Great Plains, Great Lakes, Northeast:
Residual heavy smoke from the fires in the Pacific Northwest extended
from southern Saskatchewan and southern Manitoba southeastward across the
eastern Dakotas, Minnesota, Wisconsin, northern Iowa and Illinois before
becoming light to moderately dense and turning east northeastward across
southern Michigan and into the Northeast south of a frontal boundary.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
