DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0045Z SEPTEMBER 24, 2008

Southland:
Numerous fires across AL and MS produced narrow plumes of thin smoke
that extended and moved WSW to W that were on average about 10-15km
wide. Some of the more significant plumes were from fires in SE Sumter
county, AL and the central boarder of Leake and Neshoba counties in MS.
Each plume extended about 100km.

Arkansas:
Fires in the southern 1/3 and SErn portion of the state were producing
distinct stronger moderately dense puffs of smoke within a broader thin
smoke plume that would move to the WNW to NW extending about 50-75km.
The most significant plumes originated from fires in: far North Central
and NE Lincoln county, NW Dallas county, ext. SE Nevada county, and SE
Cleveland county.
In Oklahoma:
A very similar fire to those in AR in central Pushmata county produced
smoke that moved due N and covered much of the middle 2/3rds of the
county as it extends into far southern Latimer county.

New Mexico:
A fire along the southern forested regions of the Nacimento Mtns in
central Sandoval county is producing a 5km wide plume of thin smoke that
extends ESE to the county line where I-25 crosses into Santa Fe county.
A fire E of Gallina and N of Coyote in Rio Arriba county is producing
thin smoke that extends due east across the Rio Chama river valley not
more than 25km.

Arizona:
Two distinct fires in far SW Coconino county in the Coconino Nat'l forest
are producing thin to moderate smoke that extends NE over to Holbrook,
AZ in a 25km wide plume. The eastern fire is more active than its
western counterpart.

Southern California:
The Hidden fire in N Tulare county and unnamed fire along the N. Kings
River in E Fresno county have been producing moderate to dense smoke
throughout the day that has remained in the local valleys surrounding the
fires...where it can be quite dense. However, as the day progresses thin
to moderately dense smoke has been expanding over the mountains toward
the E from the unnamed fire as far as the NV/CA line in northern Inyo
county and S Cottonwood Range and N. Paramint Range in central Inyo.
Interestingly, moderate smoke from the Hidden fire has sunk into the
lower slopes of the Sierras and is moving NW along the flanks across N
Tulare, E Fresno county into Mariposa county.

Northern California:
Small agricultural fire in the far north of the Sacramento Valley have
produced small puffs of thin to moderate smoke that are generally moving
north covering very limited areas.

The Klamath Complex (and former Blue2/Siskiyou complexes) continue to
be active in 4 separate areas: 1) Along central Del Norte and Siskiyou
county line (most dense smoke) – moderate 2-3) Extreme W Siskiyou county
(central and southern) and a 4) new fire in N Humboldt county. Each area
is producing thin to moderate smoke that extends NE. It covers most of E
Siskiyou county and portions of southern Josephine and Jackson counties
in Oregon.

Oregon:
Dense high clouds are moving in obscuring much of state, though moderate
smoke from the Lonesome complex could be seen moving ENE across C Klamath
county in a 40km wide swath.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
