DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0200Z SEPTEMBER 26, 2008

Southeast US:
Numerous agricultural fires this afternoon covered areas of Alabama,
Mississippi, Louisiana, and Arkansas producing light smoke plumes. Most
of these plumes were heading to the southwest.

California:
In northern Tulare County, a fire is producing light to moderately
dense smoke into Fresno and Inyo Counties and extends 150km from the
source. Another batch of fires in Del Norte and Humboldt Counties are
producing light to moderately dense smoke plumes, drifting to the south.

Oregon:
A light to moderately dense smoke along the borders of Lane and Jackson
Counties extends to the northeast at least 75 km from the source.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
