DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0145Z SEPTEMBER 28, 2008

Southeast US/Lower and Middle Mississippi Valley/Southern Plains:
Numerous and most likely prescribed/ag fires are burning across the region
with a great numbers of these fires located in the SE MO, western TN/MS
and eastern AR region producing light smoke, but causing a large plume
of light smoke over the specified region.  Some fires are large and in
Bacon and Pierce county GA, Vermilion and Tangipahoa counties in LA,
in Dallas county AR and Panola county TX.

Central Kansas:
Numerous and most likely prescribed/ag fires are producing light smoke
across the central region of the state.

Southern Manitoba/Northern Minnesota:
Numerous fires in the region are burning and causing mostly light smoke
with some sections of moderately dense smoke.  Smoke is mostly moving
south.

Idaho:
Wildfires burning in Clearwater county (western edge of Clearwater NF)
are producing light to moderately dense smoke moving east into Mineral
and Idaho counties.

Oregon:
In Jefferson county (Deschutes NF) wildfires are producing light to
moderately dense smoke moving east into Deschutes, Crook, Wheeler, Wasco
and Grant counties. In Douglas and Lane counties, wildfires are emitting
light to moderately dense smoke that is stretching into the counties of
Jackson and Klamath.
In Marney county a wildfire is producing moderately dense smoke east
into Malheur.

California:
In Del Norte and Siskiyou counties (Siskiyou Mountains and Marble
Mt. Wilderness), the Klamath Complex wildfires are producing light to
moderately dense smoke plumes north into Curry, Josephine and Jackson
counties in southwest Oregon.
The Hidden fire in Fresno County and the other wildfire in Tulare county
(burning in the Kings Canyon and Sequoia NF) are producing light to
moderately dense smoke moving west NW into Merced, Mariposa, Madera,
Stanislaus and Tuolumne counties in central California.

Ag fires in the Sacramento Valley (counties of Glenn, Colusa, Sutter
and Butte) are producing light smoke stretching into Placer, Plumas and
Yuba counties.

From earlier today:
Ontario, Canada:
Residual smoke stretches across western Ontario from the fires that have
been burning in eastern Saskatchewan over the past week.

  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
