DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0145Z SEPTEMBER 30, 2008

California:
A large fire in southern Monterey county had a plume of moderately dense
to dense smoke that was lifting to the north extending into the north
San Francisco Bay area.

Northern California/Oregon/Washington:
The long running fires in Del Norte and western Siskiyou counties were
producing moderately dense to locally dense smoke that was lifting north
into western Oregon and Washington and off the coast into the Pacific. The
smoke was blending with additional fires in western Klamath and eastern
Douglas counties in Oregon which were also producing moderately dense
to locally dense smoke. A fire in eastern Harney county in Oregon had
a plume of moderately dense smoke that was lifting north into Grant.

A pair of fires in Okanogan county had narrow smoke plumes that were
moderately dense and lifting north to the Canadian border.

Alabama/Mississippi:
Several smoke plumes were seen scattered across this area. The plume
were thin to moderately dense and were mainly drifting to the south.

Arkansas/Missouri Bootheel/Louisiana:
Numerous small puffs of smoke were seen over eastern Arkansas, southeast
Missouri and Louisiana. The plumes were mainly light. The plumes across
Louisiana and southern Arkansas were drifting to the south while
those over northern Arkansas and southeast Missouri were moving to
the northeast.

Texas:
A fire in central Texas in southern Llano county had a plume of moderately
dense smoke that was moving south into southern Gillespie. A plume
of light smoke was seen moving from western Johnson into northern
Bosque. Several fires in Castro county in the Texas Panhandle were
producing moderately dense smoke that moved west and south covering much
of western Castro and northwest Lamb.

North Dakota:
A fire in northern Stutsman had a plume of moderately dense smoke moving
southeast into northwest Ransom.

South Dakota:
A fire in the Black Hills had a plume of light smoke that was drifting
to the west.

Wyoming:
Fires in southern Teton, central Lincoln and northwest Natrona had plume
of moderately dense to locally dense smoke that was mainly drifting to
the southeast.

Montana:
Fires in Carbon and Garfield counties had plumes of mainly light smoke
that were moving to the east.

Idaho:
Numerous fires were seen across the state. A cluster of fires
in Clearwater and Shoshone counties had light to moderately dense
smoke moving to the west and northwest but mainly staying within the
counties. Fires in southern Twin Falls and northwest Camas had plumes
of moderately dense smoke that were moving to the north.

Arizona:
A series of fires across southern Coconino had plumes of thin smoke that

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
