DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 2345Z OCTOBER 4, 2008

Missouri Bootheel/NE Arkansas:
Numerous agricultural fires in the Mississippi River Valley of SE MO/NE
AR and isolated fires in E TN have been producing small puffs of thin
smoke that had been wafting around their sources for much of the day,
but the last few hours have begun to consolidate and drift northward.

Canadian Prairie and N Minnesota:
There are numerous agricultural fires across much of S Manitoba,
W Manitoba (west of the large lakes),Saskatchewan and N MN. However,
only a few isolated fires have produced detectable smoke. The few in
Roseau county MN have been thin smoke that is moving extremely rapidly
NNW across S Manitoba. No plume is greater than 5km wide but do extend
for quite a distance.

Otherwise, cloudy conditions across much of the US and Canadian West
and Mountains have reduced detections of fires let alone smoke from them.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
