DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 2245Z OCTOBER 5, 2008

Kentucky:
The Pinch-Em Tight fire in far NW Wolfe county is producing a line of
moderate smoke that extends 25km NE into N Morgan county, however a fan
of thin smoke extends ESE to NNE covering the rest of N Wolfe county.

Mississippi River Valley:
A large number of agricultural burns in the Mississippi River Lowlands on
the western side of the river from NE LA, E AR and the Bootheel of MO are
producing a significant amount of thin smoke that is moving NW.  The areas
of smoke extend about one to two counties NW of the fire sources but cover
nearly all of the counties from the river to the approaching cloud line.

Wyoming:
A new fire on the eastern flanks of the Wyoming Mtns in E Sublette
county near Halfway, WY is producing a 15km wide plume of thin smoke
that extends due E to the SW flanks of the Wind River Range.

  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
