DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0145Z OCTOBER 12, 2008

Smoke:
Idaho and Washington:
There are wildfires in northern Idaho (particularly Shoshone and
neighboring counties) and southwestern Washington and some of these fires
have smoke that is visible in GOES imagery. In particular, the large
fire in southwestern Shoshone County (including the bordering area with
northwestern Clearwater County) is producing an area of mostly light
smoke that extends westward into the state of Washington.

Dust/Sand:
Oregon/California:
An area of apparent moderate blowing dust/sand originates in Lake County,
Oregon and extends southward into northern California (especially Modoc
and Lassen Counties).

Arizona/New Mexico/Utah/Colorado
A plume of light sand or dust extends from northwestern Arizona through
the 4 corners area and into southwestern Colorado.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
