DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0130Z OCTOBER 15, 2008

Florida:
A fire near the border of Gulf and Franklin counties is generating
light to moderately dense smoke which is traveling offshore to the east
extending over 150km and becoming 70km wide.

Alabama:
On the southern border of Covington County a fire is emitting light
smoke which is moving to the southwest through the Florida counties of
Okaloosa and Santa Rosa.

Louisiana/Arkansas:
Near the Louisiana and Arkansas border there are two fires which are
emanating light to moderately dense smoke which extends to the southwest.

California:
In southern California the Sesnon Fire near the Ventura and Los Angeles
counties border continues to generate light to moderately dense smoke.
This smoke is moving west over the Pacific and is extending over 1000km
to the southwest. Earlier today, the Juliet Fire on the coast of San
Diego County, produced a large puff of moderately dense smoke which
moved quickly off shore and began to disperse. The Chalk Fire on the
coast of Monterey County is emitting light to moderately dense smoke
which is moving south. In central Mariposa County, a fire is emanating
moderately dense to dense smoke which is traveling to the south through
Madera County and into Fresno County. A fire in southwestern Plumas
County is emitting light smoke which moves east through Sierra County.
In western Glenn, eastern Butte and western Colusa counties, several
small fires are generating light smoke which is staying near the areas
of origin. A fire in north central Lassen County sent off a puff of
smoke earlier. Over the last five hours it has crossed the Nevada border
and has stretched out so that it covers the width of Washoe County and is
in the northwestern portion of Pershing County. Siskiyou County has two
fire in its eastern half which are sending out light to moderately dense
smoke. Smoke from the northern fire is moving off to the east through
Modoc County and approaching the Nevada border. The smoke from the fire
in southern Siskiyou County is moving to the south into Shasta County.

Oregon:
In Klamath County a fire in generating light to moderately dense smoke.
The smoke is moving to the east and has reached central Lake County.
Southwestern Jackson County has light to moderately dense smoke which
is also moving to the east. On the coast in Curry County, a fire sent
out a dense plume which is moving to the south offshore and maintaining
its shape and density.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
