DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0115Z OCTOBER 16, 2008

Oregon:
Scattered fires in central and eastern Oregon, notably in Harney and
Klamath counties, generated light to moderately dense smoke that extended
to the east.

California:
Dense smoke extended 65 km to the south of a fire in Mariposa County
while moderately dense smoke extended 40-45 km to the east southeast of
fires in Siskiyou and Shasta counties.

Arizona:
Light to moderate smoke extended 75-100 km from fires in Coconino,
Del Norte, and Navajo counties.

Virginia/North Carolina:
Smoke was moving generally east from scattered fires across southern
Virginia and north central North Carolina, including moderately dense
smoke moving east from Mecklenburg County, Virginia.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
