DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0200Z OCTOBER 19, 2008

Southeast Ontario:
Fires in Southeast Ontario north of Lake Huron and Georgian Bay are
producing thin to moderately dense smoke northeast.  The smoke is reaching
parts of southwest Quebec.

Southern Louisiana:
Numerous fires (most likely prescribed/agricultural burns) are burning
across southern sections of the state (counties of Lafayette, Iberia,
Assumption, Iberville, Acadia, Vermilion and St Martin)  and are producing
light plumes of smoke that extend south into the Gulf of Mexico.

Washington/Idaho:
A fire in Ferry county (Colville NF) is emitting thin to moderately
dense smoke east into Stevens and Pend Oreille counties in Oregon and
Bonner county in Idaho.
In southern Okanogan county (Okanogan NF) a fire is producing thin smoke
southeast into Dewey county.
In southeast Chelen county (Wenatchee NF) a fire is emitting smoke
southeast into Douglas and Grant counties.

Oregon:
In southeast Klamath county a fire south of Gerber Reservoir is emitting
thin to moderately dense smoke northeast into Thayer county.

California:
The wildfire in Monterey county is producing smoke north NW into the
Pacific Ocean. The full scope of the smoke cannot be seen due to clouds
along the coast.

A fire in central Riverside county is emitting light smoke north.

  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
