DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0200Z OCTOBER 20, 2008

Louisiana:
Numerous fires are located across the southern section of the state.
Fires in Iberia, Iberville and St. Martin counties are producing light
smoke south toward the Gulf of Mexico.

Texas:
A fire in east Chambers county is producing thin smoke southwest into
southern Galveston county and the Gulf of Mexico.

Washington:
Fires in Stevens and Ferry counties (Colville NF) are emitting thin
smoke north into Okanogan county and southeastern British Columbia.

Idaho:
Fires in Shoshone county (Coeur D'Alene NF) are producing thin smoke
north into Bonner and Kootenai counties.

Oregon:
A fire in northern Union county (Umatilla NF) is producing thin smoke
north into Umatilla and Wallowa counties in Oregon and Walla Walla,
Columbia and Garfield counties in Washington State.
A fire in southeast Klamath county (Fremont NF) is emitting moderately
dense to dense smoke northeast into Lake county.

California:
In northern California, fires in Glenn, Butte, Colusa, Sutter and Plumas
counties are producing thin smoke.  The smoke is moving mostly north
into neighboring counties.

In central California a fire in northwest Mariposa county (Stanislaus
NF and west of Yosemite NP) is producing thin smoke that is spreading
north/south into Tuolumne and Madera counties.

The Chalk fire in Monterey county is emitting thin to moderately dense
smoke west to southwest toward the Pacific Ocean.

  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
