DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0030Z OCTOBER 23, 2008

Pacific Northwest:
Fires in Oregon, western Idaho, northern California and southern
Washington have resulted in numerous plumes of light to moderate smoke
that were moving generally towards the north. Of particular significance
were fires in Jefferson, Wheeler and Lake counties in Oregon whose light
to moderate smoke plumes extended up to 200 km away.

Southern California:
Light to isolated moderate smoke from the Chalk fire extended as far
north as San Francisco Bay.

Arizona:
Light smoke extended 125 km to the southwest of a fire in southern
Coconino County.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
