THROUGH 0115Z OCTOBER 31, 2008

Florida:
Light smoke can be seen drifting to the south from Sumter, Dixie,
Okaloosa and Calhoun counties. A large fire on the coast of Bay County
is generating light to moderately dense smoke which extends over 150km
over the Gulf of Mexico.

Georgia/Alabama/Mississippi:
In the southern portions Georgia, Alabama and Mississippi there are
quite a few agricultural fires which are emitting light smoke which is
drifting to the southwest.

Louisiana/Arkansas:
Through central Louisiana and Arkansas several agricultural burns are
emanating light smoke which is moving to the north. In the northeastern
portion of Arkansas there are numerous agricultural burns which are
generating a large plume of light smoke which is moving to the northeast.

Texas:
In the eastern portion of Texas there are few agricultural fires which
are emitting light smoke which is moving north.

New Mexico:
Light to moderately dense smoke which is traveling to the east is
originating in the southern portion of Rio Arriba County. In the
northern portion of Rio Arriba County another fire is generating light
smoke which is also moving to the east.

Arizona:
In Coconino County there are two fires which are both emitting moderately
dense to dense smoke. The fire in the southern portion of the county
flared up earlier in the day and the smoke fanned out over 200km in width
(east to west) and 200km in length (north to south). The fire in the
central portion of the county has denser smoke but the extent (north

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
