DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 2330Z OCTOBER 31, 2008

Kentucky:
A fire along the southern county line between Leslie and Clay county,
KY has been producing thin smoke that is moving NE in a 7km wide plume
that extends into SW Knott county.

South Carolina:
A fire in N Edgefield county has produced a plume of smoke that was
about 5km wide that moved due south to the GA/SC line into N Richmond
county, GA.

Western Georgia:
Three fires: 1) along the Taylor/Crawford line, 2)C Talbot and 3) N
Meriweather/Troup county line have produced 5-7km wide plumes of thin
smoke that extend about 30-45km due W into the boardering counties.
The Meriweather/Troup fire's smoke reaches into Chambers county AL where
it melds with a very similar 5km wide plume of thin smoke that extends
W across all of N Tallapoosa county.

Florida Panhandle/S Alabama:
A few fires over E Covington county, AL, Santa Rosa and Okaloosa counties
in Florida all produced thin smoke that moved due W about 35km in plumes
that were about 5-10km wide. A fire in W Jackson along the NW boarder
of Washingotn county (E-W boundary...not N-S) produced a similar 5km
wide plume but it extended toward the SW across C Washington county.

South Florida:
A very large fire in NW Monroe county produced smoke but it was mixed with
weather clouds making the determination of density difficult to discern
though it moved offshore about 50km in a 12km wide plume toward the W.

SW Alabama:
A few fires in NW Clarke and SE Choctaw county AL (along with a fire
on the MS/AL boarder in central Wayne county all produced 7-10km wide
plumes of thin smoke that extended due W about 40km.

SE Lousiana and coastal parishes:
Numerous agricultural fires along the Mississippi River and west to
Vermillion Bay and E Cameron parish produced puffs of thin to moderate
smoke that wafted very close to their sources or less than 20km to the W.
The fire in SE Cameron parish was particularly strong with moderate
smoke that extended in a 10km wide plume that moved W then SW over the
Gulf of Mexico about 25km to 40km.

W/C Louisiana and S Arkansas:
A smattering of fires across all parishes West of the Mississippi River
and north of Cameron parish produced long plumes of thin to moderate
smoke that extended NNW to N covering a large portion of the state and
S AR where it was becoming obscurred by approaching thunderstorms and
showers from NW AR. All plumes were less than 10km wide but some did
extend over 50km particularly those over the NW parishes of LA and the
S central counties of AR.

Similarly 2 fires, one in Newton, the other in Jasper county produced
northward moving plumes of thin smoke.

Panhandle of Texas/OK:
Twp fires across Castro county TX produced bursts of moderately dense
smoke that quickly moved toward the NE covering the county and portions
of SW Randall county. The plumes were about 7km wide.
Fires across Hansford and SW Ochiltree (one along the Texas, OK county
line) produced puffs of thin smoke that drifted SW then shifted W and
now are fading out over N Dallam county as it is moving NW. The area
is about 15km wide N to S and nearly extends the length of Dallam county.

SW Kansas:
A few fires in SW Grant county and central Stanton county produced puffs
of thin to moderate density that are moving NW in 3km wide lines but
only cover central and SW Stanton county.

Arizona:
A fire in far SE Coconino county (near the county line in the forested
area) that could be producing locally moderately dense smoke but that
can not be determined due to local mountain weather clouds. The smoke
then moves NE into the desert and can be seen in a 25km wide plume that
continues NE across C Navajo county where it turns E across central
Apache county to the SW flanks of the Defiance Plateau.
A fire in E Gila county is producing a moderately dense pocket of smoke
that is expanding out from the source in all directions but has extended
15-20km outward except in the NNE direction where thin to moderate smoke
moves over the Mogollon Plateau about 20km into S Navajo county.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
