DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0015Z NOVEMBER 03, 2008

West Virginia:
A small fire in central Logan county is producing thin smoke in a 3km
wide plume that extends toward the NW into SE Wayne and W Lincoln county.
A fire along the SE Wyoming/Raleigh county line has produced thin smoke
in a a 5km wide plume that also extends NW covering the eastern 1/3rd
of Raleigh county to the Boone county line.

W Ontario:
A fire on the southern portion of Little Vermilion Lake along 94W in
western Ontario has been producing thin smoke for a few days now. Today,
the smoke was moving NE rapidly in a 5-7km wide plume extending well
over 75km.

N Minnesota:
A fire on the southern shores of Lake of the Woods near Arnesen, MN
produced a burst of moderate smoke that moved due east but expanded NE
to cover a large portion of the main lake and has moved over Big Island
and lake extentions to the east.

Alabama:
A fire in far NW AL in W Colbert county produced a few puffs of moderate
smoke but consistent thin smoke for a large portion of the morning hours
into early evening. The smoke moved WNW into NE MS (covering the northern
2/3rds of Tishomingo county) and very little into S TN (Marion county).
A fire in south central Conecuh county produced a 5-7km wide plume of
thin smoke that moved W extending as far as far N Baldwin county, AL.

Louisiana:
Numerous fires along the southern stretches of the Mississippi River
south of Iberville parish produced copious amounts of thin to moderate
smoke that covered all of the land between the river and Vermilion Bay
as the smoke moved SE. A few fires with thin to moderate smoke could
be seen on the northern side of Vermilion Bay in Iberia parish moved
due WSW rather than SW.
A fire in SW Vermilion parish along the coast produced a strong puff
of thin to moderate smoke that moved both SW, W and NW dependent on
the height. The higher smoke moved over the Gulf extending about 40km
from the source, while the thinner lower level smoke barely make the
Cameron parish line.
A fire in far NE Rapides parish near the intersection of LaSalle and
Grant parishes produced thin smoke that moved due west in a 10km wide
plume as far as Red River.

Coastal SE Texas/SW Louisiana:
A fire along the TX/LA state line in far NW Cameron parish produced
a 10km wide plume of moderately dense smoke that moved due west into
central Jefferson county.
A fire in S Beauregard parish produced a 5km plume of thin smoke that
moved NW to the state line.
A fire in far SE Jefferson county, TX produced moderately dense smoke
in a 10km wide plume that moved west barely into E Chambers county.
A fire in NW Jefferson county, TX was seen through smoke from the previous
fire, but a small 4-5km plume of thin smoke could be seen mixed with
low level cumulus clouds moving NW into far SE Liberty county, TX.

SE Arkansas/NW Mississippi/NW Louisiana:
Agricultural fires across the Mississippi River plain are producing
similar smoke conditions...Puffs are about 5km wide and extend about
25-45km toward the NW. These affect the following counties/parishes. In
LA: N and E Morehourse, In MS: W Carroll, C Leflore, W Tallamatchie,
S Bolivar (along the Washington county line), In AR, C Desha.

NE Arkansas/SE Missouri:
Moderately dense cirrus and jet contrails make detection of smoke
difficult, however, longer duration animation shows a large amount of
agricultural fires from E Jackson, W Craighead, S Lawrence, and NE Clay
counties in AR, along with fires in S Sutler, N Dunklin, N Pemiscot and
New Madrid counties are producing thin smoke that moves due N in a 3-5km
wide line and extends between 35 and 50km.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
