THROUGH 1630Z NOVEMBER 16, 2008

Southern California:
A large plume of moderate to dense smoke can be seen from the Freeway
Fire (N Oragne/SW San Bernardino/SE Los Angeles county with a small
contribution from the Sayre fire in W Los Angeles county. The smoke
starts as a 10km wide plume from the Freeway Fire source to about the NW
tip of Orange county where it expands over the Los Angeles metro and is
35km wide. As the smoke moves offshore and across far SE Ventura county
the plume is about 100km to San Nicolas Island then expands further to
the S (while keeping the same northern boundary around 34.2N) out to
32N120W and west as far as 122.2W between 32 and 34N. The most dense
area of the plume is between the Channel islands and San Nicolas/Santa
Barbera from 120W back to Redondo Beach.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
