DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0330Z NOVEMBER 19, 2008
California: The southern California fires were much harder to detect in satellite imagery today. In addition, there were very little if any active emissions. The one exception would be remnant fire activity over northern Orange County that appeared to emit a very small and thin smoke plume around sunset. Overall though, a large area of what appears to be remnant smoke covers the coastal locations of San Diego/Orange/Los Angeles/Ventura/Santa Barbara counties. From there the remnant area of smoke extends westward to the offshore islands. Louisiana/Eastern Texas: A large number of fires were detected over the area this evening. Numerous smoke plumes were detected with these fires with the majority of plumes mostly drifting off to the southwest. The most noteworthy smoke activity appeared to be associated with fire activity over southern Vernon and northern Beauregard Parish. A large area of moderate to extremely dense smoke covered portions of Beauregard and Calcasieu Parish and extended towards the Lake Charles area. Arizona: A fire over western Coconino near the Hualapai Indian Reserve just northeast of the Natural Bridge was emitting a moderate to extremely dense smoke plume that was drifting northeast towards the western portions of Grand Canyon National Park. Lanai – Hawaii: A large wildfire north of Palaoa point on the island of Lanai in the Hawaiian island chain was producing a large and very dense smoke plume that was extending about 100 miles west/southwest from it's point source.
