DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 2300Z DECEMBER 3, 2008

Southeast US:
Several smoke plumes, most of which were narrow and had thin density,
were seen over Florida, South Carolina and Georgia and were drifting to
the north. The smoke plumes were mainly across northern Florida, central
Georgia and along the central Georgia/South Carolina border. One fire
with a moderately dense smoke plume was over extreme eastern Franklin
county in the Florida peninsula. A separate area of light smoke was
seen over southern Florida and was drifting to the west from near Lake
Okeechobee to near Port Charlotte.

Arizona:
Several fires in southern Navajo and Apache counties were producing
small plumes of light smoke that were moving mainly to the south.

Oregon:
Several fires were seen over Jackson, Klamath and western Lake counties
which were producing plumes of light to moderately dense smoke that
remained within about 25 km of the fires.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
