DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0000Z DECEMBER 10, 2008

Extensive cloudiness covered much of the eastern half of the nation
which greatly limited smoke detection in satellite imagery.

Southern Florida:
Several small puffs of smoke were visible moving to the north-northwest
across Lake Okeechobee from fires located just south and southeast of
the lake. These fires are believed to be primarily agricultural burns.

Utah:
A narrow smoke plume of thin density was observed moving to the south
from a fire in extreme northwestern Kane County of southwestern Utah.

California:
Small puffs of smoke were detected moving to the north from fires in
Glenn and Colusa Counties of north central California. Farther to the
south, a thin to moderately dense smoke plume was evident moving to the
southwest from a fire in south central Tulare County in south central
California. A fire in southeastern Ventura County of southern California
produced a small smoke plume of thin density which appeared to move to
the south toward the coast during the late afternoon.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
