DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0200Z DECEMBER 20, 2008

South Dakota:
Along the borders of Meade and Jackson counties, a light to moderately
dense smoke plume was spotted moving to the east earlier this afternoon.
The plume extended into Pennington, Ziebach, and Haakon counties 150km
out from the source.

Florida:
Several agricultural burns took place around Lake Okeechobee earlier
this afternoon in Palm Beach County. These plumes were short-lived and
extended to the northwest, roughly 40-50km from their sources.

  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
