DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0100Z DECEMBER 22, 2008

Florida:
Numerous agricultural fires earlier the afternoon occurred around Lake
Okeechobee, producing light to moderately dense smoke plumes. Most of
these plumes were short lived as they moved to the north and northeast
into Palm Beach County, directly over Lake Okeechobee, and into Martin
County as well, before moving off the coastline and over the Atlantic
Ocean. Also, these plumes extended out roughly 60-70km out from their
sources.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
