DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0000Z DECEMBER 23, 2008

Southeastern US:
Several fires were evident in satellite imagery to the east and
southeast of Lake Okeechobee. These fires were believed to be primarily
agricultural burns and were responsible for patches of thin smoke which
spread to the southwest and off the southwestern Florida coast during the
late afternoon. In central Florida, a long thin smoke plume was observed
moving to the southwest from a fire in west central Osceola County.
In the western Florida panhandle, at least 5 smoke producing fires
were detected. Thin to moderately dense plumes were visible moving to
the southwest and offshore from these fires. Farther to the north, thin
to moderately dense smoke plumes were also visible moving to the south
from fires in Bryan, Liberty, and Long counties of southeastern Georgia
and near the border of McDuffie and Richmond counties of eastern Georgia.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
