DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 2345Z DECEMBER 29, 2008

Florida:
A fire in far southwest Dade county had a plume of light smoke extending
to the south across Florida Bay toward Long Key. A small patch of light
smoke from a fire on the southern shore of Lake Okeechobee was seen
drifting to the east across the southern portion of the lake early in
the afternoon.

Georgia:
A pair of fires in eastern Laurens and western Liberty counties had
narrow plumes of light smoke that extended to the east about 40 km.

Louisiana:
A fire in southern Vermilion parish had a plume of light smoke that
drifted to the south southwest into the Gulf of Mexico.

Texas:
A blaze in eastern Kleberg county had smoke that moved in two
directions. Smoke that was mainly below about 3000ft was moderately dense
and extended to the south southwest into northern Kenedy county. Smoke
above about 3000 ft extended to the east into the Gulf of Mexico and
was mainly light.

Montana:
A fire in southeast Musselshell county had a plume of light smoke that
extended to the northwest into the north central portion of the county.

Northern Mexico:
A cluster of fires in the central highlands of Chihuahua had light smoke
plumes that extended about 50 km to the northwest. Numerous fires in
northwest Sonora were producing plumes of light smoke that were gradually
drifting to the southeast.

  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
