DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 2345Z DECEMBER 30, 2008

Georgia/Florida:
Numerous fires were seen over Florida and the southeast half of Georgia
with mainly small plumes of light smoke that remained witjhin about 20 km
of the fire. Some of the more notable areas of smoke were: around Lake
Okeechobee, where the plumes mainly drifted to the south in the morning
and early afternoon; in Franklin, Gulf, Liberty and Okaloosa counties in
the Florida panhandle where the smoke drifted to the northeast; western
Liberty and southern Laurens counties in Georgia where the plumes moved
to the east.

Oklahoma:
Narrow plumes of light smoke were seen extending to the northeast from
fires in Atoka and Pittsburg counties, while narrow plumes of light smoke
from fires in Seminole and Mcintosh counties were moving to the southeast.

Northern Mexico:
A fire in extreme northwest Sonora state, north of the Gulf of California
had a long,long plume of smoke that extended to the south into the
Gulf. A cluster of fires in northwest Sonora about 100 km south of the
Arizona border near Lukeville had plumes of light smoke that were mainly
drifting to the east.

  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
