DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 2345Z JANUARY 2, 2009

Florida/Georgia:
Fires in Evans and western Liberty counties in eastern Georgia had
light to locally moderately dense smoke plumes that extended up to 50
km to the northeast. In south Florida, fires south of Lake Okeechobee
in western Palm Beach county produced light plumes of smoke that drifted
to the southeast.

Texas:
Fires in southern Jim Wells and eastern Kleberg in south Texas had plumes
of light smoke that lifted to the north.

Mexico:
A cluster of fires in northwest Sonora state about 150 km south of
Lukeville Arizona along the border were producing an area of light
smoke that was drifting to the east. A fire in northern Baja California
just south of the California border near Calexico had a plume of light
smoke that was drifting to the east northeast across the border to
near Winterhaven.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
