DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 2345Z JANUARY 3, 2009

Missouri:
Numerous fires were detected over southwest Missouri but only 2 narrow
plumes of thin smoke were observed over Vernon and Bates counties. The
smoke was moving to the northeast.

Texas:
Narrow plumes of thin smoke were seen over Parker, Mitchell, northwest
Val Verde and southern Maverick along the Rio Grande. The plumes were
short and mainly moving to the northeast.

Mexico:
A cluster of fires in northwest Sonora about 150 km south of the Arizona
border near Lukeville were producing a small area of light smoke that
was lifting to the northeast.

  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
