DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0000Z JANUARY 11, 2009

South Florida:
Numerous agricultural fires most likely from the sugarcane fields south
and southeast of Lake Okeechobee produced puffs of mainly thin smoke
which combined into a somewhat larger patch of smoke and that moved to
the northwest across Lake Okeechobee during the afternoon.

Northern Florida:
A fire in Wakulla County of the Florida Panhandle emitted a moderately
dense smoke plume which moved to the north and just to the west of
Tallahassee during the late afternoon.

Southeastern Georgia:
Fires in northern Long County and central Bryan County of southeastern
Georgia produced moderately dense smoke plumes which moved to the north
and into southern South Carolina.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
