DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 2345Z JANUARY 15, 2009

Southeast US:
There are numerous small plumes originating throughout the panhandle of
Florida, southern Alabama and eastern Texas. The majority of the plumes
are moving to the east.

Louisiana:
There is a large plume of light to moderately dense smoke which originates
in central Grant Parish and fans out to the east covering the majority
of La Salle and Catahoula Parishes.

Texas:
Two large fires in Kleberg County are emitting light to moderately dense
smoke which is fanning out over 140km to the north covering 110km at
its widest point.

New Mexico:
In central Otero County a plume of light smoke is moving to the east.

California:
In northern Humboldt County a fire is emitting light smoke which is
moving to the west out over the Pacific Ocean.

Oregon:
In southern and northern Curry County there are fires which are generating
light to moderately dense smoke which is moving to the west out over
the ocean.

Gulf of Mexico:
A thin line of haze can be seen extending over 400km N to S along 94W with
the northern extent over Galveston Bay. This is likely remnant smoke from
yesterdays fires but exact origin and composition cannot be determined.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
