DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0230Z JANUARY 18, 2009

Southeast:
Numerous fires are burning across the southeast especially in Florida,
Georgia and South Carolina. Many of these fires are producing only small
thin plumes of smoke. The largest of these fires are located in Florida.
In SW Monroe county a fire is emitting thin to moderately dense smoke
moving SW into the Gulf of Mexico just north of the Florida Keys.
Some light smoke may be reaching the Keys, but it is not seen at this
time. A fire on the border of Orange and Brevard counties is emitting
moderately dense smoke SW into Osceola and Polk counties. A fire in NW
Volusia county is emitting thin smoke SSW into Lake and Seminole counties.

Louisiana:
A large fire on the Marsh Island State Wildlife Refuge is most likely
producing smoke, but due to cloud cover it is not seen in visible
GOES-12 imagery.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
