DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0030Z JANUARY 19, 2009

Florida:
A large fire just west of Yeehaw Junction in far SE Polk county produced
a 15km wide plume of thin to moderate smoke that extended NE out to
Cape Canaveral.
A large fire near or on the Kennedy Space Center has produced a moderately
dense smoke plume that extends NE nearly 175km in a 5-10km wide plume.
A fire in far NW Marion county (along the Putnam county line) betweem Lake
Oklawaha and Lake George in the Ocala Nat'l Forest has produced a 5-7km
wide plume of thin smoke that extends NE about 50km into the Atlantic
(crossing just north of the Flagler county line in St. John's county.
A smaller fire near the SW edge of the Ocala Forest similarly produced
a plume of thin smoke but since it started later...it only extended NE
to the edge of the prior fire.
The numerous sugar cane fires in the swamps S and SW of Lake Okeechobee
produced puffs/plumes of thin smoke that consolidated into a larger area
moving due E and extended well out into the Atlantic to around 78W just
north of Grand Bahama and was about 60-70km wide.

Bahamas:
A fire on the western third of Grand Bahama produced a plume of thin to
moderate smoke that extended NE about 60km and was about 7km wide.
A fire in central Abaco island produced a much wider (15-20km) plume of
thin to moderate smoke that extended due E about 100km but faded as the
day progressed.

Louisiana:
A fire on SW Marsh Island produced thin to moderate smoke in a 3-5km
wide plume early in the afternoon but faded by sunset...though it did
extend SE about 75 to 100km.
A fire at the southern point of Vermillion Parish produced a similar
plume (though later in the day) that extended SE about 75km and was
about 3-5km wide.
A fire in far western Cameron Parish (west of Johnson's Bayou) produced
a 5km wide plume of thin smoke that extended 50km to the ESE.
Two fires in Grant Parish (one NC, the other ESE) produced plumes that
extended ESE. The first was about 6km wide and was thin smoke extending
into La Salle parish, though the other was much larger 10-15km wide
and began to fan out covering a large portion of E LA and SW MS into
Wilkinson County and East Feliciana Parish.

Arkansas:
A large fire in SW Scott county produced a 10km wide plume of smoke that
moved SE nearly to the NW tip of Clark county. This plume was a bit more
dense in the valley near the source.
A fire in SW Independence county produced a plume of very thin smoke
that was only seen at a very steep sun angle but it was about 7km wide
and extended ESE into E Cross county.

Oklahoma:
A fire at the intersection of LaFlore, Haskell and Latimer counties
produced a 5km wide plume of thin smoke that extended about 25km to the
ESE to the OK/AR state line.
A large prairie fire in central Harper county produced a plume of thin to
moderate smoke that started moving SE but turned toward the SSE covering
a large portion of Woodward county before clouds began to obscure it.
Kansas:
A fire in C Finney county produced a 3km wide plume of thin smoke that
moved SSE into N Meade county.

Oregon:
A fire in far SW Douglas county is producing a 5km wide plume of thin
smoke that extend about 25km NNW clipping the western section of Coos
county.

California:
A fire in N Humboldt county is producing a 5km wide plume of thin smoke
that extends maybe 15km to the NNW nearly to the Del Norte county line.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
